Rafting is a great introduction to whitewater paddling for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. The Chattanooga area holds two of the nation’s most beautiful whitewater rivers: the Ocoee and the Hiwassee.
The Middle Ocoee River
Two dozen professional rafting companies provide guided trips on the Ocoee, where Class III-IV rapids provide an adrenaline pumping experience for adults and kids ages 12 and older.
A busy day on the Hiwassee River
The wide, rolling Hiwassee is suitable for anyone age 6 and older, with Class II chutes and wave trains that can be run in multi person rafts or single or tandem duckies.
Further east, on the borders of North and South Carolina, the Nantahala and Chattooga Rivers offer rafting experiences in wilderness settings for both families and adrenaline junkies.
Check with individual guide services for safety recommendations, age limits, and other details.
Even gently flowing water can contain hazards that injure or kill people. Do not attempt whitewater rafting, especially on an unfamiliar stream, without proper guidance, training and equipment.
