The landforms that surround Chattanooga were created through the millenia by the movement and retreat of an ancient sea bed.

What remains are the rugged, rockey table top mountains of the Cumberland Plateau and the rolling hills of the Tennessee River Valley, both rich in opportunities to discover: by bike, by foot, by horse, or by scaling a cliff.

To the east of the city, the foothills and high peaks of the Appalachian Mountains roll through endless acres of wilderness recreation opportunities, and the city center is full of easily accessed greenways and off road trails.
